BettySoo to close out Texas Tunes concert series at MCL Grand
Tickets are on sale now for a May 26 concert by BettySoo & Willing Company, the final show in the popular 2012 Texas Tunes concert series presented by the City of Lewisville at Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater.
The show will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall of the MCL Grand, 100 N. Charles Street, and will include a brief intermission. Tickets are $15 ($10 for seniors age 60 and older or children age 12 and younger) and can be purchased at MCLGrand.tix.com or at the Customer Service window at Lewisville City Hall, 151 W. Church Street, during regular business hours.
Lewisville residents can purchase single-show tickets for $5 each, either in advance at City Hall or on the performance date at the MCL Grand box office. Current driver’s license or utility bill will be required to verify residency.
BettySoo, an Austin-based folk singer known for her powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics, has drawn widespread critical acclaim since her first recording (“Let Me Love You” in 2005) through her most recent album, “Heat, Sin, Water, Skin,” with seasoned producer Gurf Morlix.
The newest songs add some welcome edge and grit to the heartbreaker ballads and bell-pure vocals she's come to be known for. Trying to pin her down to a single musical genre is difficult, however, and she describes the album as “a little gospel, some straight-ahead folk, a bit of twang, and maybe even a familiar oldie with a new twist. Be ready for a surprise.”
The Texas Tunes series features performers from music halls and festivals throughout the state who present great music in a variety of genres, but all with that unique Texas flair that has made the state a hotbed for fans of live music.
Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, located at 100 N. Charles Street between Main and Church streets, opened its doors in January 2011. The 40,000-square-foot facility features a 296-seat proscenium theater, black box theater, dance recital hall, art gallery, five art classrooms and a large courtyard. Medical Center of Lewisville has a multi-year agreement with the city for naming rights at the center.
To reach the MCL Grand from Interstate 35E, take exit 452 and proceed east on Main Street to Charles Street. MCL Grand will be on the left. Free public parking is available along Main and Church streets, or at Lewisville City Hall across Church Street from the center. Parking is not allowed on the grass lot across Church Street from MCL Grand.

LPD places third in gun competition
Lewisville Police Department Lieutenant Mike Lane, Sergeant Ken Naffziger and Officer Rick Crociata recently traveled to Liberty Hill, Texas, to compete in a National Rifle Association-sponsored, three-gun competition. Once the final scores were tallied, Team Lewisville took home third place in the “Tactical Division” competition.
Members of the U.S. Military; contract security operators; and local, state, and federal law enforcement officers converged in the Texas Hill Country to test their training and skills. Participants traveled from as far away as California and Oregon for this competition. Seven complex stages of fire were constructed, requiring officers to use their patrol rifles, shotguns and duty handguns for successful navigation.

Flag retirement ceremony set for May 19
Lewisville Morning Rotary Club, with participation from First Baptist Church’s Voices of Praise Choir and local boy and girl Scouts, will hold a formal U.S. and Texas flag retirement ceremony Saturday, May 19, 1-2 p.m., in the courtyard of Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street. The public is invited to participate and witness this solemn patriotic event.
U.S. Flag code prescribes that when a flag is in such a condition that it no longer is a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Since burn bans and city ordinances make it difficult for an individual to properly burn a flag in a dignified way to retire it, Lewisville Morning Rotary Club is collecting flags from individuals and businesses who need to retire them. Collection boxes for unserviceable flags have been placed at City Hall and the MCL Grand, or flags can dropped off year-round at any Lewisville fire station.
