In a previous 287g update on 07-13-2009,
I mentioned that 11 new agencies joined the 287g program. The
latest city in Texas that joined was Houston. After having an
image of being a Sanctuary City due to a policy of not questioning
the legal status of a suspect or doing anything about their illegal
alien population, they want to change that image.
OR, just
maybe, it is because they have had 3 police officers shot or killed by
illegal aliens, and one still in the hospital (partially paralyzed
and lost an eye).

the new number. The number was changed to be more consistent with
the trend to have the last four numbers read TIPS.

Travel Trailer Thefts - Looking at the City Of
Lewisville weekly
Police Chief's report, I see an opportunity for someone to help
stop a thief! He might just live near you...
Detectives are attempting to identify a suspect who stole a travel
trailer from a storage facility on McGee Lane on July 4, 2009.
Video surveillance captures the travel trailer being removed from
the property by a white GMC or Chevrolet pick-up truck. The suspect
is a white male that is believed to be in his thirties with brown
hair. The suspect may have also been accompanied by a white female.
Police believe the same suspects are responsible for a similar theft
from the 1500 block of North Mill Street on April 30, 2009.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Lewisville Police
Department at 972-219-8477 (TIPS) or Denton County Crime Stoppers at
800-388-8477 (TIPS). See photos below.

Public invited to participate in Trails Master Plan:
Lewisville Parks and Leisure Services is conducting a trails master plan
study, and will accept public input during the Park Board meeting on
July 8, 2009. Trails and greenways positively impact individuals and
improve communities by providing not only recreation and transportation
opportunities, but also by influencing economic and community
development. Goals of the public meeting are to identify trail user
types and use patterns, identify potential routes and access points,
learn user preferences on width and material of trails, and identify
connections with adjacent cities. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in
the Glenmore Savage Community Room at the Municipal Annex, 1197 W. Main
Street. For information on the meeting, please call 9672.219.3550.
Contact: Parks and Leisure Services Director Bob Monaghan, 972.219.3552
Personal note: I went to the Denton County Appraisal District
today to ask them to lower my overly appraised home value. In short, I
got it lowered about $11K. The tax rate on the
City Of Lewisville Website is 2.05598%. Basically, I spent about 6
hours of my time plus the time spent by my realtor friend who did an
analysis and I will save about $226 this next year until they raise it
again the following year. BTW, they did not like the numbers that came
from my realtor friend. They basically did not use it but it did help me
to see how my property was rated.
Getting things together, reading everything, sending
the letter with information, and other was about 3 hours. Travel and
wait time today was about 3 hours. I have flex time where I can schedule
stuff around my business meetings. Most people cannot get off of work to
do this. It is almost the cost of the pay lost. I wish that they would
error in the side of the home owner. Appraise it at a fair market value.
Also, most of the people that talked to me today mentioned that they got
it lowered about +20K as they were leaving. I felt kind of ripped off
but she would not lower.
A MUST SEE: I went to a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting today
for The Actors Conservatory Theater and a few of these Kid actors gave
us a preview. The female lead sang without music background and she was
fantastic. The cast is all kids and one adult. It’s going to be a great
show and the price - Tickets for “The King and I” will be on sale at the
box office a half hour before each show and are $10 for adults, $8 for
students and seniors, $7 for children under 10 and $7 each for groups of
15 or more. Hope you can make it.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s - The King and I
The ACT's 10th Annual Children's Summer Musical
Performances will be July 10-12, and July 17-19, at 7 p.m. Fridays
and Saturdays, and also at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

City Council Position : The Number one question that I am
asked is, “What’s different now that you are on the Council?” At this
point I see a change in my seating position at the council meetings and
I will be able to go to the Closed meetings. My First Council meeting
will be July 6, 2009. After my orientation a week ago, I am trying to
play catch up on all the manuals and stuff that was given to me to read.
Also, I have to finish some paperwork next week. Last week, I went to a
breakfast meeting at CCA and at the Regional Water District which took a
few hours of time each morning – these were voluntary meetings but very
interesting. The rest of my time is just trying to play catch up on
work. I was up until 3:00 AM last night working on a website and I am
sure that I will be working this weekend also. Sometimes I wish I had an
8 to 5 job but then again, working for myself does give me some
advantages like.... working every day ;-). I am not complaining.
I think that a regular job that is a little flexible might make it a
little easier. I guess I could win the lotto if I ever start
buying lotto tickets.
Interested in running for Office: I have received about 10
calls from people wanting to run for office since my election on June
13, 2009. Here are some things to consider in no particular order…
-
Do not listen to the Nay-Sayers. If you think you can do what is
right then run. Do it for the right reasons.
-
Be active. Go to all the meetings that you can - not just the
meetings concerning the position that you are interested. Go to
workshops, meetings, committees – all of them. Read the Extended
agenda and be prepared in case you are asked a question. Chances are
they won’t but you might just be motivated to speak up in the open
forum. Again, do it for the right reasons. Who knows, you might be
able to have enough influence that you do not have to run to make a
difference. You can support those who are doing the right thing.
-
Fill out an application to be on a board or committee.
-
Do not expect to not have any involvement and then run for
office and win. Be active. The time is now, yesterday, last
week/month/qtr….
-
Do not expect to win but be grateful if you do. There is a lot
of work to be done.
-
Pray! Make room for God in your life. If you are full of
yourself, then there is no room for God.
-
Look at all the problems that you have with all levels of
Government. My problem is the decisions that many of them are making
– at all levels of government.
-
Do your part and encourage others to do theirs.
-
If there are more than two running, consider pulling out and
supporting the better candidate. If you can avoid a run off, you can
save everyone time and money. I have personal experience with this
one… ;-)

06-26-2009: Cap and Trade (H.R.
2454)... I cannot believe this passed the House of
representatives today. I am glad that the two representatives for
the Lewisville area (Kenny
Marchant, R-24 AND
Michael
Burgess, R-26 did not vote for it. Please thank them. From
what I can tell on the
Thomas Library for
H.R.
2454, is that it still needs to go to the Senate. This bill
must be stopped!
What is cap and trade? Basically, it is another tax...
An artificially created tax. It deals with carbon emissions and
the amount that you are allowed to use. If you are in an industry
that produces carbon emissions (like breathing), you will pay another tax or buy credits
from someone who does not use theirs, etc... I expect more
American jobs to go to other countries that do not have this tax and I
expect everything we buy to get more expensive. - that is the way I see
it - John Gorena
06-24-2009: Huffines Plaza area update.... I have
received quite a few calls about what is going on at Huffines Plaza
since June 16, 2009. Callers have reported that the police
are stopping those that are seeking day laborers at this location.
{Note: Since I was
elected on the Council on 6-13-2009, I have been trying to relay
information more than blogging my commentary.} Here is some
information: The City is working with the land owner at Huffines
to enforce trespassing violations. The illegal aliens (my opinion
but you can refer to them as Day Laborers if you wish) have moved to the
7-11 at Hwy 121 and S. Mill Street. Another group is by the
St. Charles Place Apartments on the north side of the Huffines plaza. The City is trying to
contact 7-11 corporate office to work on this issue as the local manager
likes their business. I personally will not be going to that store
(yes, my commentary - I said I have been trying).
ACTION ITEM: Please
contact the City and let them know that you like what they
are doing (they are doing a great job). Please call the City (972-219-3400):
Police Department and City Manager's office, etc...
Also, take a few minutes and
Fill out the
City Survey
(leave them your contact information also - it means a lot).
